Thumping Sound When Indoor Fan Spins Down

by Visitor

Recently my indoor blower has gotten extremely loud. There is lots of vibration on the handler unit when running and when it cuts off, as the fan spins down there is very distinct and timed thump as if the fan is out of balance or it is hitting something.

With each revolution of the fan there is thump. I can sit there and count the thumps until the fan stops rotating (usually about 6-8 revolutions).

Eventually I figure it will give out. It is 11 years old and I already replaced the outside unit about two years ago.

No Brake
by: Anonymous

"braking system" The fan indoor and outdoor stop due to friction (naturally).

There is no brake in indoor or outdoor fan.

Central ac units thumping sound
by: Anonymous

I had a new unit installed which made the thumping sound each time it shut down. The tech said it had a braking system that stopped the fan from spinning. Could this be right?

Indoor Blower Sound
by: Dadan

The indoor blower could have foreign material in the blower house (material box) and as the blade rotates, it hits the blower house or there could be loss screw inside and wire.

The indoor motor and the blower house could also be the problem. Someone needs to take it off and look at it.

I hope I help.
