My central air conditioner comes on, cools the house down but upon reaching the set temperature it doesn't turn itself off automatically. Do I need to replace the thermostat?

Having as much info as possible about the situation is very helpful. Knowing if the unit is older or newer, or if the thermostat is new, if it's a digital, how the other one was wired, Ect.. Helps!!

Check your Tstat settings
by: bigtom25

Depending on the type of thermostat you have there are settings that only the original installer would have access to. If you are the installer or have the installers book then you will be able to change the settings of the thermostat.

I mean if it's a digital thermostat which can be used for multiple types of units then you will have special settings in the thermostat for different types of units. Also like the other person said on here to make sure it is wired correctly.

The only thing is if it is a Heat pump you don't need a white unless you have accessory heat strips or 2 stage heating. Your white will be or will say W or O/B. The O is reversing valve in Cooling or B is reversing valve in Heat.

Just depends on what brand of unit it is to determine how the reversing valve is energized. It sounds like to me your internal setting is set for convential heat and not heat pump.

SO your condenser is coming on for cooling but your air handler is waiting for your the indoor sensor to heat up to turn on your fan. Does it do the same thing if you put it into heat?

Actually I think I am going to need more info from you to be more accurate with an answer. Is the unit new? Or is it a new thermostat? Is the thermostat compatible for a heat pump? Or is it a straight cool stat with convential heating?

Is the thermostat for accessory heat? I am going to re-read your posting. I hope I am not confusing you with all this!!

try disconecting contol voltage(thermostat)wiring.start over and read manufactures instuctions closly.sounds like wires are not in correct sequence...red power green fan, yellow cooling, white for heating you should have a conection for the reversing valve also,x or o,i think...hope this helps
