Sounds Like an Air compressor Recharging

by Joe
(Northport AL)

I have an Rheem classic series heat pump air conditioner unit and it makes the sound of an "air compressor recharging" after the unit is off when it's in heat mode.

It doesn't make the sound every time its off and I hear the sound in the attic and from the outside unit. Any ideas on what is making this sound?

Whoosing sound

On a Rheem heat pump the reversing valve is energized in the heat mode. You likely have a two stage thermostat, and when it is satisfied the reversing valve will be de-energized. This will allow the preshers in the unit to equalize causing the whoosing sound. This is normal and is nothing to worry about.

Most other brands of heat pumps will energize the reversing valve in the cool mode,(Rheem and Ruud both energize in heat mode) so you may not notice your neighbors heat pump making the same sound.
