Single Story with 2 Central AC Units?

by Robert
(Phoenix, AZ)

I am purchasing a home that currently has 2 central air conditioner units. The house is 2300 square feet with 3 bedrooms and a large great room. One of the central AC units is a Trane that is 23 years old and needs replaced. The other ac unit is a Payne that is about 5 years old.

With today's energy efficient units, is it a good idea to just go with one new system or 2 smaller systems?

If two ac units in single story home, should temperature settings be identical or should one thermostat be higher/lower than the other. It seems I have one unit that hardly ever turns on

Two AC Units single story house NEW
by: Anonymous

Hubby vs Wife - We have a single story house with two AC Units. One covers the master bedroom, two baths, and mudroom. The other unit cools/heats the living room, kitchen, 1 bath, office, and two bedrooms. Husband says the thermostats need to be set at the same temperature so that one unit isn't running harder to cool the other unit's rooms. Wife thinks since both units heat/cool different parts of the house, it IS NOT necessary to keep the thermostats temps the same. Am I wrong?

2-Air Conditioners
by: Anonymous

I’m trying to figure out the most cost efficient way to
Run my two Air Conditioners. One is in a add on family room/kitchen and the other one is in the living room and bedrooms. I can shut off the two rooms with doors but was wondering if I should keep them open so they can work together. All rooms are mostly occupied with kids.

Similar Boat NEW
by: Phillius

I am in a similar boat. I am renting an apartment with two AC units. One runs through the apartment, the other is built into the living room wall. I always wondered if it was fine to run them both at the same time, or if I should use just one?

2 outside/1 inside?
by: christy

I have just started doing my own investigative work on this... One of my questions is: Can you have 2 outside units run off of 1 inside unit?

how many units?
by: Anonymous

depending on the layout of your home and the uses for the rooms it may be more cost effective to have 2 units so you are not cooling the entire home on every use. of course you can close vents in rooms not used if you go with one unit. if it was me I would go with 2 so I could cool in zones and regulate how often my units are running. this will not only save you money but extend the life of the units. also depending on where you live (me, florida) it would be wise to have a unit cooling a smaller area that could be hooked up to a generator in case of power outages (hurricanes) so you can cool a area and still be comfortable in your home with out overloading the generator.
