My Rheem central ac unit with heating has the older refrigration formula. I have only had to replace the compressor (sprial) once.
My chief complaint is the darn old contactors. I have used 30 amps, until recently a refrig. Tech suggest that I try to up-it to 40 amp.
They,30amps. work find for three to four months, then they began to stick, closed, in the down position. Eventually the contactor will darken, stick and burn-out.
I have had many technicians, refrigration experts from Rheem and others who have no viable answer. They have not offered any solution or conclusion to my problem, with the contactors sticking.
I like the Rheem since I can readily access the componets and attempt to address the issues. In this case, I have been unable to solve it with the help of Rheem experts, and without help, For my next central ac unit, I would like to return with Rheem, but eith the new regulations R22, they would have to replace my heat unit, which is costly, in addition to the central ac unit.
I HAVE BEEN INSTALLING RHEEM FOR 2 YEARS NOW AND NOT ANY MORE... I HAVE NEVER HAD MORE PROBLEMS WITH ANY OTHER BRAND.. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS SUCH A JOKE AND THEY DONT WANT TO HELP ANYBODY INCLUDING CUSTOMERS... COMFORTMAKERS PICE IS SO MUCH BETTER AND IN THE LAST 2 YEARS I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WIT THERE EQUIPMENT

You are correct in that a new R-22 system can no longer be manufactured. The new R-410a systems operate at a much higher pressures and can not be mixed with older equipment.
You will have to replace your indoor coil if you replace the outdoor unit. A new unit will be a higher efficiency system and the savings in electrical cost to operate the cooling unit should pay you back for the heating unit in a short time.
Your contacter problem may be caused by low line voltage causing the contacts to burn prematurely.
The 40 amp contactor was a good suggestion.
