My York Central Air Conditioner is only 4 years old and it does not work

by Miguel Rivera
(Philadelphia, Pa)

March 6, 2011

My York Central Air conditioner is only four years old and it does not work. I have no heat for the last few days. When I turn the central air to heat it clicks on but does not work.

The fan works, but when I switch it to heat it does not work. It’s 35 degrees outside and I have no heat. The electrical board has a red blinking light, which flashes 7 times, indicating that something is wrong with the gas valve.

Gas valve problem
by: Cheste

You have answered you own question, “The electrical board has a red blinking light, which flashes 7 times, indicating that something is wrong with the gas valve”.

There is a malfunction in the gas valve circuit that must be repaired. This could be one of several problems such as simple as a loose connection or a gas valve that has gone defective. You need a qualified HVAC technician to check the system and repair or replace the gas valve. If the gas valve is defective you may have a five year warranty on parts, so it may not cost anything but labor.

DO NOT ATTEMPT to make the repairs yourself. If the repairs are not done properly the results can be catastrophic. People have been killed because of a malfunction in a gas furnace.
