Compressor not running, but condenser fan is

by Ron
(West Palm Beach)

Today, my air conditioner unit decided to give up the ghost for some reason. The unit inside the house is running, as well as the condenser fan, but the compressor is quiet as a mouse.

I checked the breaker, and even replaced it since I didn't like the way the original one felt. I have changed the batteries in the thermostat, and checked for voltage at the condenser. I had the condenser replaced a couple of years ago, and I really don't know how to test to see if it is bad.

Compressor Not Running
by: Dadan

Hey, Mel

It sound like the outdoor unit is pulling to much current and it trip the breaker. I have a ideal what is wrong with it. I'm not 100 percent sure. Calling the local tech is the best solution.

Condenser Fan Run But Not The Compressor Motor
by: Mel

It has been very hot in S.E Michigan the last few months

Central air unit working fine all along cools nicely. Here is the start of the problem: Friday works fine went to bed got up Saturday house is 84 degrees, always keep thermostat at 74 year round. I went out to subpanel took my tester for ohms checked both fuses one was blown

I replaced both anyway. Turned central ac unit on auto and still nothing and went to main fuse box in basement and noticed that central ac breaker was also tripped previously so I flipped back on then turn unit on cool, nothing so i check fuses again the same fuse was popped.

I replace this one again and checked main breaker again and it had not tripped. so i turned unit on auto again and still nothing, fuses are ok, main breaker ok. turned unit off and waited 15 minutes then turned it on, finally the outside condenser fan started and i figured the problem solved so I waited for the house to cool down.

after half hour the temp in house had risin to 86 degrees so i went outside to see and hear compressor kick on and nothing, went to basement to feel coolant lines and they were not cold, all vents upstairs were blowing air but not cold. Mystery so far, any suggestions before I call out service? thanks Mel, plymouth, MI

Have the same problem. Fix it by replacing the capacitor for about $45.

Same Problem here

I am having the same problem and was wondering if you had your system checked yet? My inside AC unit is running and blowing warm air to my upstairs. My outside fan is not running, thus I'm not getting cold air into the house. Any ideas?
