Central air conditioning unit is working, but no cool air

by Lynne
(Birmingham, AL)

My central air conditioning unit appears to be working but there is no cool air. The filters are clean, there is no build up of ice on the lines and the unit outside is operating but not like it should.

The fan is working but at a much slower pace than it does when the
central ac unit is working like it should.

I had the Freon filled approx. 1 month ago and the repairman told me that the Ac unit was operating correctly.

Other than needing Freon, he could detect no problems with the unit. My a/c unit is a Nordyne Standards Efficiency Split System, S3QA/S3BA Series.

Central Air Units ICe
by: Dadan

Hey, Amanda

If a capacitor is bad, you would hear hum sound or you won?t hear anything. The outdoor fan would rotate, but it would also struggle.

My thought is your previous problem could have cause the current problem. Have someone fix the icing problem?

You should have local tech look at your central air unit, before it get worse.

no cool air
by: Amanda

I have an central ac unit, it was recharged 2 years ago but last summer the lines started icing up real bad from the furnace all the way to the outdoor unit.

Well when that happened it stopped blowing out cold air and now it stopped icing up but still no cold air and it will run all day.

I was told that the capacitor which looks like a little tin can could be bad. does anyone know if this could be the problem?

I broke down and called a repairman
by: Lynne

I broke down and called a repairman (we're having temps in the 90s).

Turns out a wire burned out on the compressor. The repairman said I was lucky it didn't take out the compressor. It ended up costing me $45.00 for parts and labor.

I do hope my experience will help someone in the future.

Central ac unit is working but no cool air
by: Shawn

Hey, Lynne

How is our homepage? I made few improvements. Hopefully, Dadan going to like it.

There are 2 copper lines going to the condenser units.

You could put your hand on the suction line and feel if the line is cold. By the way, the small bare line is hot. No, it wouldn't burn you.

Suction line (big insulated line)

Liquid line (small bare line)

If you don't feel anything it could mean something is causing the compressor not to run. Or the compressor is on high pressure safety switch due to condenser fan.

A/C is working but no cool air
by: Lynne

"You have air blowing through your supply grilles, but its not cool, right?"

If you are referring to the indoor vents than yes, air is blowing and it is not cool.

"The fan is working but at a much slower pace? You're saying that the condenser fan is running at slower speed. Does the condenser fan turns off automatically sometime?"

The fan never turns off.

"If the condenser fan does turn off. Could you hear the compressor runs?"

Other than the fan, I'm not hearing anything.
