Tough Job NEW
by: D-Cool

I get it, it's a tough job, hot in the summer, cold in the winter. But if you work on someone's unit and cause a catastrophic failure, I shouldn't have to pay for the mistake. I shouldn't have to actually pay for anything. It was a annual service visit...

In the end, I split the bill with them. I did it for reasons you mentioned. I still don't believe my routine visit, adding the hard start kits would have cost me an additional $600 after the split, but I paid it anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.

listen, alot of customers don't realize that the Air-Conditioning business is seasonal and the work is very demanding, Hot and takes someone dedicated to do the job right. They have expenses to you know. Licensing, Continuing Ed. Insurance, Maintaining Vans, and so much more. Imagine you work all year round and are assured a paycheck week, month etc... they are not. The brunt of the money charged goes back into the business. It's 90% summer when they work for you who gripe and complain. It is what it is.

Ducane Units - Compressor Failure... NEW
by: D-Cool

I have 2 Ducane units for my home, they were installed in October of 2015 by the previous owner. In 2017 I had the units serviced and again this year [2018]. Both years I told the tech that the larger unit is 'jarring' on. The tech this year recommended adding a hard start kit which I agreed for both units. The smaller of the 2 units is fine. The larger unit, the hard start capacitor failed, the main capacitor failed along with the compressor a week after installation. May be circumstantial but seems odd that they checked out the units, everything good but one week later, after the hard start kit was installed I had a massive failure. Any relation to the work that was done or does these parts just fail without much warning?

i had a goodman evap coil replaced for 2,000 dallors. my ac contractor told me the coil was around 600.00. he didnt give me and hourly rate just said it would take 3 to 4 hours. Then nu-22 for the Freon with new valve stems at 35.00 per lb. for a total of 12 lbs. He fixed my drainline because it didn't have a cleanout, no charge. he reinsulated part of copper line, no charge. There were considerable debris tree limbs in the attic from a fallen tree he cleaned up with vacuum no charge he said. during the initial call hei asked him what the going price was and he said 2000. i explained the prior company had come in at 2,250.00 for the job. i just feel he charged me to much since the 3.5 ton coil only cost 350.00 that he said as much as 600.00. does this sound right?

2 or 4 years ago I bought a 2 ton 16 Seer complete unit (outdoor and indoor) for $1700 online (delivered). I found a legitimate tech doing his own 2 man company who installed the system (it replaced an old failed system) for $800. Brand new efficient gradeA central A/C $2500, COMPLETE. It can be done, buy your own system and find a small time independent installer. A/C companies prey on your sense of urgency and hope you'll consider a big price inevitable. Don't fall for it!

2016 Cost to replace 3 Ton Central Air? NEW
by: Dan

I live in the Austin, TX area. My current AC system is working fine, but I have two units 12 SEER. They are both around 12-13 years old. I want to go to a min 16 SEER. I have been getting quotes for 16 SEER and 20 SEER systems. The quotes range from $16K to $25k. Carrier, Standard, and Trane units. I am still waiting for a Lennox quote. The quotes seem to very high to me, but I have never had to have a central air replaced. Any recommendations? Are these prices in the ballpark? Quotes are basically for swapping out the evaporator in the attic and the condenser units outside...adding new thermostats.

Had a local guy install mine.... NEW

I know a guy who is a certified AC technician (used to do it for a shop). Had him put in a 3.5 ton unit for $4,000, and he did a great job. The other unit I had a shop install, and they didn't complete it, and did nothing at all with the ducts, which were undersized for the unit. No, you don't always get what you pay for. There is a lot of markup involved. But I would make sure you know and trust whoever you have do it.

NOTHING CHEAP IS GOOD AND NOTHING GOOD IS CHEAP! NEW
by: A/C Sales Guy South Texas

The cost to replace your system depends on a number of factors, a heat-load should be done on your home to ensure the proper size a/c is to be installed. The new r410a refrigerant is totally different from the r22. With the Government mandated efficiency guidelines the manufactures have had to lower capacity to meet those guidelines, your project manager should size the system correctly, you may have to replace the copper line and duct-work. As always NOTHING CHEAP IS GOOD AND NOTHING GOOD IS CHEAP! Make certain that you inform yourself as much as possible to make the right choice for you and your family, your project manager should help you make the decision not make it for you.

I managed to get the motor for a 20+ year old Rheem for $85.00.
I removed the motor with the fan no problem. I had ALL electric shut off.
I could not remove the fan from the motor spindle so took it to a mechanic who did me a favour by removing it for $20.00.
Took my time and installed the new motor. Put back all as it was and lo and behold it worked.

ARS is not cheap, but they are better than your friendly local one man show, mine answered my phone call from the roof top and never call me back!
ARS has a person who picked up the phone right away and the workers do show up on time and their van is stocked with all the parts and components needed to get the job done.
They are competent and work in professional manner and keep the place clean.
But their diagnosis is not clear to layman, one said my condenser unit would be good for another 2 years, others said it is better to be replaced, and they are right, the condenser/compressor is under a lot of pressure due to the extension valve ,whatever it means,i dont understand all that.
You just hope ARS does not go under and AMANA is good enough for ten years,AMEN

final figures NEW
by: gekko907

well, finally has furnace, evaporator coil and condensing unit all replaced by ARS.
First phase-
replaced the evaporator coil, its filter and furnace in the attic with plenty of R22 freon on a Sunday afternoon by 2 men. They also cleaned the outside condensing unit.
Bill comes to $4014.
Second Phase-
Outside condensing unit needed to be replaced,it is a 10 Seer 2 1/2 ton unit provided by the builder in 2002,my house requires a 3 ton unit.
ARS came and replaced it with a 3 ton 13 SEER Amana unit which uses the new freon, the freon is condensed and come with the unit.
He placed the resin slab on top of my existing concrete slab so it raises the condenser unit ,which helps to protect it from being hit by a lawn mower.
Also a hard start kit and thermal extension device is installed.
Removed and captured old Freon R22 .
Tested everything works fine.
So far so good, but from what I read AMANA is not the best brand .
I asked the guy if it will now last ten years since all three units are new,he was mumb,no comment?
Cost of the second phase - $3468
So grand total is 3468 plus $4014= $7482 plus a $20 tip for the last guy.
One year parts warranty and ten years labor warranty from ARS.
It takes 5 trips for ARS to complete the job, first guy came to look at what is wrong and left with a quote,2 guys came on sunday to install evaporator coil and furnace, another guy came to add more R22 FREON the next day and the last guy came to install the new condenser unit.
I priced those parts and a Seer13,3 ton AMana online-
a 3 ton 13 seer AMANA condenser unit can be bought online for $1700 including shipping, breakers is $8 a piece, you would need 2 breakers.
hard start kit is around 30 dollars, extension valve is more may be $100,resin slab ??$25.
So if you can buy all the parts and unit yourself, and find a reliable man to install them, you will save money but if after 5 years he is not to be found, then you have no warranty.

13 SEER RUUD System NEW

Have an HVAC tech and friend I've known for years that has performed work on our previous & current home.

Current home: our 15yo 3.5 ton, 10S RUUD unit for the downstairs living area need replacement (evap housing leaked water, compressor making noise, not cooling efficiently). HVAC tech recommended we replace w/similar unit; 3.5 ton condensor / 4 ton evap, 13S.

Installation included new evaporator, condensor, overflow drain pans (two units in attic), replace exisiting (hard rubber) overflow drain lines w/ pvc (enlarge holes on side of home to fit new pipe), demo exisiting evap drainage lines (two units teed together) and configure separate drainage lines w/clean-out), install aquaguard float switch in both overflow pans (to "kill" unit in the event of water leak into either pan). Performance test system & returned 2 days later to check operation and freon level. Cost = $3000.00
....believe we got a v fair deal.

Gosh, I'm a single woman who know nothing about purchasing A/C units. I need to replace a 21 year old 2 ton carrier.

I am interested in the new RU410 refrigerate because the Ru22 will soon be totally banned but price is a factor.

I got a quote to replace my existing unit with a no-name brand (concord) never heard of it for $1500. That's just the unit outside and its with existing RU22. Got another quote to replace it with the new RU410 and change the evaporator coil to support the new refrigerate.

That price was $2300 for a Payne. Can't believe how much it cost. I replaced one of my units 10 years ago for $1100, but its RU22. I don't want to get taken and these prices are making me crazy.

This cost me $5,500 for an Amana central air conditioner system with 10 yr parts warranty.
I will tell you though, I have had the Furnace fixed twice (paid labor only) and the AC Unit fixed once (paid labor only)and now the AC Unit is down again.

I have 5 condenser units. One just went it was a 5 ton Trane (the original units that cooled ther whole house of 2200 feet). The house was increased to 5600 square feet and 4 additional units were added.

So the original Condenser now only cools 4 rooms and about 1200 square feet. could I go with a 4 ton unit instead of the 5 ton?

I got a quote of 4300 for a new Trane 5 ton (this guy said he could put a 4 ton in their for about 3700).

I also got a quote for 2800 for an American Standard 5 ton 13 seer. This guy said that he would have to replace the handler if we went with a smaller AC unit (4 ton). Any other questions I should ask???? Thanks.

Higer Price!
by: William

The cost is not normally disclosed to the consumer. American Standard (Trane) products are normally higher priced than most brands.

You are correct in thinking you overpaid for the job. A 3ton condenser R-22 installed in your market area sells for $2800-$3200.

This would include a new orifice or TXV at the coil, vacuuming the system, refrigerant, liquid line drier (if not already installed on condenser) and recovery and recycle fee.

The task normally takes around an hour and a half. Were you able to deduct the fees for diagnostic of the failed unit? Did you get a labor warranty with the parts warranty?

Replaced Hvac Unit In Houston
by: Rick

We had a 3 year old Amana central ac unit that failed. They wanted $2,600 to replace the compressor, dryer, etc. It was an R-22 type and we decided to get a new hvac unit that uses R410A.

The new hvac unit is a 5 ton, 14 SEER Maytag with a 10 yr warranty. We also had to replace the coils due to the fact we were changing refrigerants. Total cost = $5,300

How did we do?

Which Company in San Antonio a ripoff?
by: Anonymous

I wish the guy with the $1500 repair in San Antonio could tell which company? I am getting ready to replace my ac (has been out for a week) and I don't want to get taken. I am trying to do my research to educate myself some, but it is hard to know who to trust.

For the person trying to figure out how to pay. We are in the same boat. I ended up applying for a credit card offer that is doing 0% for 15 months.

Home Central AC Unit
by: Jesse

Well, I?ve read so much information about when it becomes replacing the central ac unit at your home. Gosh everything is very expensive, cost so much, to replace the whole unit and labor. Then again; the License Contractor that you'll be dealing with. Hopping they?ll do a good job.

The problem with me is that I don't have the funds to replace my central air unit and pretty soon I?ll be needing one. My only choice is to do financing, and interest-rate on a loan like this between 2k to10k at least will be depending on my credit.

I wish that this could be added to my mortgage loan. -But yeah lately, I?m having issues with my central ac air. The coil has a leak. The tech that went by my house and see check the whole central air unit. Stated will be soon needed to replace the compressor/out side fan motor; besides the Coil. My home is a 1873 sq ft. Any advise from anyone will appreciated.

$1500.00 dollars For Condenser and Indoor Motor - A ripoff
by: Anonymous

On July 26, 2011, my home air conditioner system was not cooling my wife called in a contractor to check it out.

The tech told my wife that the blower motor was going bad and the condenser fan motor was leaking oil or lubricant and needed to replaced both motors, My cost $1500.00 dollars, he told my wife that that includes a 1 Year warranty.

I found this to be overkill in repair cost. I regretted to have them do the job for that amount but I was out of state at the time and my wife was suffering the 100 degrees temp. inside the home.

The tech. also informed me on the phone that the central air units I had at home was under sized for the size of my home, this ac unit came with the purchase of my home 5 years ago. He suggested that I replace the central ac unit with a new one the price quote to me on the phone was $12,000.00, this was for a 5 ton 15 SEER standard 410A refrigerant with ten year warranty, I told him no way.

I can't see the justification on this price for an install I find it to excessive to just replace the refrigerant pipe disconnecting the electrical removing the old central air unit inside and the unit outside and replacing the new ac unit, with new refrigerant lines, connecting the existing electrical, pulling a vacuums on the system and fine tuning the new system with refrigerant, with two techs. This should take a few hours and the existing duct work will be used no need to replace.

I just found out that I can buy a new 5 ton split system 18 SEER heat pump with a second stage cooling and heating air handler with 10 year warranty for $5000.00 dollars delivered to my home.

All I need to do is get someone to do a simple install of the central ac unit and the only difficult part in doing this job is removing and replace the refrigerant lines because the new ac unit uses bigger size pipe, with labor, tax I should not expect to spend over $1000.00 to $2000.00, because this should only take a few hours for two techs. to complete, If not then I will have to do it myself.

I use to do hvac work years before so that is why I'm pissed that their are still some contractor out there that will take you for your money. I find the price quoted to me was excessive. If I was at home at the time I could fixed the problem and saved money on the two motors, I will be arriving home in a few days and I plan on checking if those two motors are really bad.

Beware and make sure you get other quotes before you agree on a price. Also there was no 1 year warranty on the new motors just 30 days according to the fine print on the invoice that my wife read later she should of had them write it on the invoice but she did not know better.

This took place in San Antonio, TX.
