Central Air and Heating Not Working

by kevin
(port st lucie, florida, usa)

I live in Florida where it gets cold about 1 month/ yr. I've been in my house with a Lennox indoor air handler/outdoor fan/pump unit for 5 yrs without any issues. Its gotten cold (30s) the past 3 nights. 1st night, everything went well; heater came on/off with no problems.

2nd night, the heater began blowing cold air at about 8pm and ran constant blowing cold until 2am, when it magically began working, heated up the house and ran fine throughout the morning/ day. I had an ac service come out to check it.
They said it was fine but tried selling me a larger unit.

Night 3, the heat cut out around 10pm and continuously blew cold the remainder of the night (down to 59 degrees in my house currently at 6 am, despite a thermostat setting of 72). Again the vents are putting out cool air nonstop. Any suggestions or solutions?

Heat pump problem
by: Chester

A heat pump will generally not be able to provide enough heat when the outside temperature is below about 35. Sounds to me that the electric heat elements in the air handler are not working. There could be several causes such as bad relays or even open fuses in the air handler.

A qualified HVAC technician should be able to diagnose and repair.

Heat Pump not working
by: HVAC Tech (Retired)

On a Lennox HP the reversing valve must be energized in the Cool mode. When your heat pump goes into defrost it will initiate a cool cycle and bring on the electric heat strips.
I sounds like you may have an intermitent problem with the defrost board. This is a small printed circuit board in the outdoor unit. It may be kicking the unit into defrost mode without staging in the electric heat elements.

Heat Pump Not Working
by: Dadan

All I know it is heat pump unit, I couldn’t tell you anything from the information you provided. The best suggestion is to call a technician when it’s not heating.

Don’t call them when the heat pump magically starts working again. Some technician won’t spend the time to find the problem.
