Central Ac unit Running Constant With No Results

by James
(Missouri)

1,000 square foot house.

Goodman outdoor unit around 3 years old.

Outdoor temp. around 90.

Had no problems last summer.

Set on 75, runs constantly but won't go under 80.

Blows cold air.

Runs hours on end without changing temperature.

Technician added 2 lbs. of refrigerant today, no change.

Said if there's a leak, would be in the coil.

Musty smell after turning unit on (could just be from the basement musty smell).

Checked filter and it was perfectly clean.

Air worked great last summer.

Furnace worked great in winter.

Central AC unit is not cooling right NEW
by: Anonymous

I have my thermostat set on 70 and it gets up to 75 in my house. It doesn't cool right. It runs constantly. Have had the freon checked and it is ok. The filter is clean. It ran this way all last summer and now this summer too. Could it be that the unit is not big enough for the house?

Stat says the set temp is at the set temp NEW
by: KMC

however, the room is warm. I had a townhouse over 1,200 feet, two bedrooms, dining room, living room, kitchen 3 baths and set my thermostat at 74 sometimes 75 and the entire upstairs and downstairs were cool and I never paid more than $159 for electric. I moved into a 669 sq ft one bedroom single level apartment and set my a/c at 74 but the place is much too warm. My bill came today for one month and my electrical bill is $160. Can someone explain please what I should be about checking the a/c before going to management. Thanks so much.

Mine too NEW
by: Anonymous

I have 1742 sq feet and a 3 ton unit. My air handler is a couple of years old. My system is not shutting off. I have the thermostat set at 74 and the house will not get below 78. The air temp coming out of the vents is 55. I had to put a window unit in the master bedroom because it has a 10-15 degree temperature difference. Ever since I put the window unit in the rest of the house is cooler (75-76).

I was told that I need insulation and this will correct the problem?!?!?!? Truth or smoke blowing?

Hire Tech
by: Dadan

The central ac is not working purposely and it is throw money away per month. If you are planning to use your central air, the best thing you should do right now is to get some experience tech to look at it.

Good Luck

Constant Running a/c
by: Anonymous

My central air unit had the coil replaced last summer, it was filled with freon less than a month ago, but now my central ac unit is on every ten mins I have sat here and listened for it to come on and cut off and its been ten mins every time.

I have a small apartment and my electric bill has been almost $200 dollars each month. My boyfriends house is bigger than mine and his house is a lot cooler than mine but his bill is cheaper than mine. I don't know what else I should do!

No Cooling Output
by: Dadan

Have it always been this way? There is a lot of brilliant Tech over the place. If you would provide detail maybe we can help you.

Central ac not cooling does not necessary mean it needs a Freon (we already found that out). Central ac not cooling properly could be from airflow, refrigerant, or mechanical problem. I ready don’t know what to you except to find Tech with flat rate labor and hire them.

Central AC Unit Running Constantly House Not Cool
by: Addie

I am purchasing a "fixer upper" house. The central ac unit runs continuously but house does not get cool. The thermostat is set on 70 but the temp in the house is 85.

Had repair man over and he put freon in the unit, which brought the temp down by one degree. The inside air conditioner unit is a fairly new ac unit, about two years old. I have put foil over the windows as well to help with direct heat. Nothing is helping.

House won't cool down until the sun goes down
by: Eddie Smith

I'm having the same problem. I set the thermostat at 74 degrees but the temp stays around 79 and the unit runs constantly. Air feels cool at the vent, but not sure how cool the incoming air should be.

Central Ac Unit Run W/Cold
by: James

As far as I know the outdoor unit was the only thing replaced 3 years ago (previous owners did it). Placed thermometer on a/c vent and it was between 60-65 degrees.

After sun went down last night it got down to 78 after running constantly for around 5 hours (started at 82 degrees). It's a small, open house with updated insulation and hardly gets any direct sunlight. Last summer the A/C kept the house very cool while hardly running at all, so it's not a size issue.

The air flow also seems to be about normal. Thanks for the help, don't want to pay another $100 to not fix the thing, but have to get it fixed before the real summer heat gets here!

Central Ac Unit Run W/Cold
by: Dadan

Is it just the outdoor unit that is 3 years old or the entire central air conditioner?(indoor and outdoor)

"Blows cold air."

What is the temperature of that cold air? And If you were to put a thermometer against your return vent. What is it temps?
