Central Ac Unit Blowing Warm Air

by Janet
(Arkansas)

The central ac unit is blowing warm instead of cool. The blower is (obviously) working and the outside fan is running also. But while the fan on the outside unit is running, I can hear something trying to kick on and I'm guessing it is the compressor.

The central ac unit will make a humming noise for a second or two and then it stops. Two years ago the outside unit was only humming - the fan wasn't running - and the technician changed the capacitor.

Could a bad capacitor keep the compressor from kicking on or am I facing the cost of replacing the compressor?

Airflow problem

Clog or bend duct work can have the same effect on airflow problem. The first thing I would do is to check for duct work restriction or leak. Where is your air handler unit at?

Cold Upstairs and Warm Downstairs
by: Anonymous

I have a York Model #MA20DN21A. During this summer, the unit will kick on and blow lots of of cold air upstairs, but downstairs get very little airflow. The air that comes out of the downstairs vents is about the same temperature so I have ruled out coil freeze up. I change the filters every month on the 1st.

Could this be a clog or air restriction in the main duct that leads down to the downstairs vents?

central unit

I went to turn the theromstat on cool. the temperature did not got down. It was blowing out warm air and not much at that. I went outside and the unit was humming like it was stuck. What could be wrong.

Thanks, again!

Thankfully it was just the capacitor. Not nearly as expensive as replacing the compressor! Thank you very much for your input.

Central Ac Is Warm
by: Dadan

What I meant was the internal part of the compressor will not rotate. Whenever a compressor stuck, you will need something to boost it up (I’m presume your central ac compressor is stuck). It could just be a bad capacitor.

Thanks Dadan

Can you clarify? If the compressor is "stuck" does that mean it's not working?

Yes, a bad capacitor can prevent the compressor from running. The humming sound could also mean the compressor is stuck. And I do hope it’s the capacitor.
