by John
(New Orleans, LA)

Can you run your heater even though the outside compressor isn't working properly on your central AC/Heater system?

Yes. You can replace only Indoor unit OR only outdoor unit. Only care should be taken to choose the same properly

Run the heater
by: Cheste

If your system is not a heat pump the outside unit should not be running while heating. If it is a heat pump system (which is likely in New Orleans) and the outside unit has a problem, you can heat your house by switching to emergency or supplemental heat on the thermostat. This will cut the outside unit out of the picture and you will be heating with the electric heat elements that are in your air handler. This should provide all the heat you need. This will be more expensive than heating with the heat pump, so you should get the system repaired as soon as possible.

As always HVAC equipment should be serviced and repaired by qualified technicians. This is not a "Do It Yourself" job.

Regular Central Ac Units
by: Dadan

If it regular central ac units. it's ok to run the heater.

IF this is Heat Pump units and you have problem with the compressor units. It wouldn't works.

You still could use the emergency heat. It wouldn't heat the house much, but it better than nothing.
