Can an existing freon heat pump be serviced under the new federal ban of freon?

by Consumers

I have a 20 SEER Carrier Heat Pump in excellent condition. I was told that the local service company no longer services my central air condiitoner unit and I would have to buy a new one.

I understand the new Federal regs on the conversion to Puron, which is really no better for the environment, but is it true that my existing heat pump cannot have freon added, if needed?
