Air Conditioner Filter Drier

My home ac unit quit cooling. The service tech said it did not have a filter drier in the line and most likely some debris got in the expansion valve and caused it to fail.

Does that sound correct? Are filter driers required meaning should the builder have installed one when the house was built 4 yrs ago? Home is in Austin TX.

Filter Drier use
by: Vikash Sekhani

Filter Drier is like having an insurance on your cooling unit. It is very small amount (premium) as compared to the price of the whole unit (claim).

FilterDryer
by: Chester

A filter dryer is not required in an A/C system, but they should be, in my opinion. Very few new consstruction A/C contractors install them. When your machine is repaired you should have them install two, a liquid line filter/dryer and a suction line filter/dryer.

Ac FIlter Drier
by: Dadan

Yes, that sound correct. It's always the best option to have a filter drier in the line to trap refrigerant particle. (I'll add more info!!)
