Goodman Evaporator Coil Replaced

by Leslie
(Lebanon, TN USA)

Had Goodman central ac installed in May,2007, and heat did not work in the Fall, and next spring of 2008, central air conditioner did not have Freon in system.

Evaporator Coil had leak and had to replace it. Coil under warranty, but it still cost me around $700. for the Freon and installing coil.

This year (2011) the central ac unit has no Freon in it, so now is a time to decide what to do with the central ac unit. Replace the whole system or repair.

Other reader Replies:

Purchased a Split unit, just past the one year I discovered that the Indoor Coil, as I read many have had the same Problem, I hired a Goodman Contractor to Start this Unit up which I installed myself, having install units before in another state, I always hire a supposed to be Qualified Technician to Start up, and to check unit out to make sure it is working ok.

This Technician came at the Tune of 225.00 and assured me that it was installed ok, and the unit was put into service, no problems for about a Year, then I noticed that my unit was not cooling.

I called this Same Technician ( Goodman Listed Qualified Technician) which sent one of his " I'll Call a Beginner) he came out to check out the unit for leaks, but came out with a Freon Detector without any batteries, which I had to furnish, he first added 5lbs of Freon, charging me 100.00 for the Freon, then he did the leak test, soaped the fittings with soap, and checked for leaks, with the Freon detector, which when probing the fittings with soap on them, the detector would not read because of the soap.

I call that Dumb, because he should have checked the fittings before he soaped them. anyway, he proceeded from the Condensing unit, which had no leaks detected, to the Inside Evaporator Coil, there he use the leak detector, and found a leak. the leak was so minute that I decided to go ahead and use the unit since I needed it so bad.

I e-mailed Goodman Twice and have not had any response at all, since I purchased this Unit on line, and all communications, with the exception of maybe one or two phone calls that was made, the transaction and delivery was done on line.

I registered within the time required for the Ten Year warranty and an affirmation was sent by e-mail that the units is now warranted for Ten years.

so this Technician said he had to come back the next day because he did not have enough Freon, but there would not be an additional service charge, then the next day, he returned and charged me again to detect the leak, and a trip charge of I believe to be around 200.00.

I have all the paper work stating that they would return and replace the coil, for the charge of the First visit at a cost of 225.00, but then he tacked this charge and that is when I Asked him, no I told him to get off of my property and never set foot on it again.

I still haven't heard from Goodman, I see that everyone else seems to have the same problem, and If there is a Class Action law Suit, I sure would like to be in on it.

Unless Goodman reads this and starts to do what is Right, this is about Goodman, which I believe should do what is Right, How About it Goodman? Are You Reading these Complaints? then act like they tell me that you are, " A Christian Company"

My central ac unit is only 4 years old and I have had it worked on 6 times and I am not getting help from anyone. I have had to pay more then 2000- 3000 out of my own pocket. I really feel that Goodman and Lebanon heating and Air should have to help with this cost.

Coil failed after 3 years
by: Anonymous

Installed Amana furnace, central ac unit, and coil on 3/31/09. The coil failed on 4/16/12. We believed we were getting the best possible equipment to replace our aging system.

On 4/10/12, we had our usual spring preventive maintenance check, and all was fine. Ran the A/C on 4/16/12, and it failed. Tech who came out told me the unit had lost 50-60% of its refrigerant.

He said they have had to replace 2/3 of the Goodman coils they have installed that were made in 2008. Ours must have been made in 2008 since it was installed in early 2009.

The part is still under warranty, but he tells us the labor will be $1500!! We can't understand why; my husband will call and discuss with the hvac company with whom we've done business for 25 years.

The hvac company has been duped as well. I want to join any class-action suit that might exist and will follow this website for updates. Virginia resident

AMANA IS NOTHING BUT JUNK!
by: Anonymous

Purchased a new Amana Heat Pump in 9/2008. Problems started after the first year. Coil needed replaced, compressor needed replaced, contactor (not sure of the part name) burned along with wiring.

Heat pump unit must have had an electrical issue that no one could find (how convenient for them!!). Never knew when we would have heat or just blow cold air, or hot air in the summer. Multiple refrigerant leaks. Still had 6 1/2 years left on a 10 year warranty.

Goodman's customer service sucks. Very rude to deal with. They will not work with you at all. Gave up and replaced the unit yesterday with a RHEEM.

STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING THAT HAS THE NAME AMANA OR GOODMAN! If not, you will be sorry and have nothing but a nightmare. PRODUCT IS JUNK!

Replaced twice in 6 years
by: J.L.

I bought this Goodman unit in June 2006. During the same year I had to put Freon in and they said, they didn't fill it all the way. The next year I had to have Freon added.

In 2008, they said it had a leak and I paid to have the coil replaced $500. The next couple years I have had the capacitor go bad, added more Freon every year. Then 3+ years after replacing the 2 year old coil.

I have another leak and it needs to be replaced. It is no longer under warranty because I wasn't told about registering within the 60 day time frame. Even though I paid $50.00 when it was installed for the 10 year compressor warranty.

They will not validate the extended warranty because I didn't register within 60 days. I called asking about the coil just replaced 3+ years ago and was told they do not warranty parts.

I have been given a quote to replace the coil, labor, and freon of $2300.00 or replace the whole unit for $3500.00 This shouldn't be happening because this unit is only six and half years old. I have had nothing but trouble from this Goodman unit.

After spending thousands of dollars, I am interested in a class action law suit. Please contact me at johnna5438@yahoo.com

The repairman told me that if we do not use copper coils the heater would fail again in 2-3 yrs. So we purchased a unit with copper coils from a supplier in N. Dakota and hope to have less or better still, no problems for a reasonable no. of yrs.

Goodman Coil Leaked
by: Tony

In 2009, I bought two new 4-Ton Goodman A/C systems for my house and had them installed by a certified technician. Precisely after one year, one of the coils developed a leak, and a couple of months later, the other coil developed the same problem.

The technician who replaced my coils was the same technician who installed the original units. According to him, Goodman continued using older coils which were designed for R-22 Freon on their newer units which "required" R-410A Freon. The newer Freon works under higher pressure, and is very corrosive, which could result in leaks if used on coils which were designed for R-22.

I seriously think that a class action lawsuit should be brought on Goodman, in order to cover all of the expenses their customers have had to incur due to Goodman's recklessness. They had to have known this would occur. They probably ran the numbers, and it was too expensive for them to recall the units.

Distributors must sell copper coils first
by: Anonymous

I have gone through two copper Goodman evaporator coils, and they both leaked within a year. Johnstone and another local distributor will not order aluminum coils until they deplete their inventory of copper ones, and Goodman says this is SOP for the industry. So my contractor has to register with the Goodman-owned distributor to get an aluminum coil, and that's going to take weeks to be approved. This ain't right.

AMANA Furnace Broken in 3 yrs.
by: Anonymous

My Furnace broke after 3 yrs. and I had to pay $798.00 to have it repaired. This should not have happened to a 3 yr. old unit. My Amana AC also stopped working in 2 yrs and needed a new valve at $250.00 to replace. Has anyone had any luck with Amana paying for this bad product?

coil leak also
by: Anonymous

I bought a new home from Ryan Homes in March, 2007. I have two AC/Htg zones - both Janitrol units. Just last August (2010), I had to have my upstairs unit worked on - had a coolant leak. I had a leak test - was the coil inside.

The tech showed me what he thought was the issue, then commented that he had been replacing lots of these coils. Matter of fact, he said that
Goodman was changing the coils to aluminum.

I don't think this should be happening - sounds like very bad quality control.

Just asking.
by: Ron C

Your coil wasn't under warranty still? Usually there's a 5 year warranty on sealed refrigerant components in a system.

Also, did a tech use a leak detector to diagnose the leak in your coil, or did he just say, "Look at all this rust. This is where your leak is coming from."?

I've seen a lot of things like that in my career. Evaporator coils seldom develop leaks that fast, and if a filter dryer is clogged, that will cause the gauges to give a different reading than normal.

I'm just saying, I hope someone didn't take advantage of you.

Condenser coil
by: David

Our central air conditioner unit is 6 years old and there is a leak in the compressor coil (the coil in the outside unit).

The cost for repair ($200-$400) of the leak, with no great confidence it will last is fairly high (especially given $246 for a re-charge and diagnostics already). The leak is in the fin area, so not likely anything to do with installation issues. It is not in an area where it gets knocked around.

We have azone system and expected the Goodman, installed by former home owner, to be a given for a while and that we would have to replace the Trane central ac in the shorter term as it was 15 years old when we bought the house. Now, three years later, the Goodman is dying.

HVAC Business Owner NW Florida
by: Chuck

In the last 15 years I have fixed or replaced hundreds of coils that were early in their life cycle on a wide variety of brands, yes Goodman is one of them.

If I may interject that the installer has a responsibility to ensure the system is leak free and that the system is properly evacuated, that all non condensable i.e. air and moisture are removed down to 500 microns.

Moisture when introduced to refrigerant causes acid, which in turn Pitts copper and creates leaks.

As for all the Goodman bashing, I have found them to be one of the most customer service friendly Companys to do business with, as long as you or your installing contractor registered the equipment online in the first sixty days, you will receive ten years parts warranty if not only five.

They have a very reasonably priced extended warranty that covers labor out to ten years.
I offer this to all of my customers, at a zero % mark up, believe it or not the majority decline it trying to save a few hundred dollars.

Were you one of them!

5-ton Goodman
by: Anonymous

I'm very unhappy as my 5-ton unit just turned three years old and has an evaporator coil leak. Even with the Goodman parts warranty the labor and freon is still costing me $949.00. This comes at a very bad financial time in my life. I can't believe that Goodman would build a product that wouldn't last any longer than three years. I can see by the other reviews that I'm reading that I'm not the only one that has the same exact evaporator coil problem. I'm very disappointed in a company that I put so much trust and faith in and bragged about to many. Now I look like a fool to the ones I bragged to. Thanks GOODMAN for building such a sorry unreliable system.

Evaporator Coil Problems Goodman
by: Milton Russ

I have been in the HVAC trade for 45 years and am now a Energy Management Specialist or I was until I retired in 2006. I have worked on many residential and commercial units.

I worked for a school HVAC system and we had every brand and size of central ac units. I also installed many home central ac units. I have only had 2 coils have small leaks in them. I purchased a new house in 2007.

It had a 4 ton Evaporator coil for cooling. The first year was good. I had to rent it out. The next year it started with a leak not cooling. Then it leaked and stopped cooling again. Of course the contractor that put in was no where around since this was in Lee County in Florida near Fort Myers.

I finally was told that the evaporator coils for this central ac unit was known to get leaks in it. So I had the coil replaced in July 2010. It is now Oct 2011 and the coil has another leak and needs to be replaced again. They say that Goodman knows about the problem and is going to replace it with an aluminum evaporator coil.

They should have taken care of this problem a long time ago. They should also pay for the labor to replace and charge the unit. So much for quality control at the factory.

The house is 4 years old and we have had to replace two evaporator coils. It just does not make since to me. We need a class action suit!

Goodman Evaporator Coil (Copper) - Request aluminum one
by: Jonathan (TX)

Technician noted during tune-up service in 2nd year that the Freon had run out. We paid to get it topped up again – however in the 3rd year technician noted that the Freon ran out again and recommended that a leak search be done. Found that evaporator coil was leaking.

Phoned Goodman and turns out that the copper evaporator coils (serial number starts with 09) are not as durable as aluminum – Goodman doesn’t manufacture the copper ones anymore.

Phoned the AC service company (Airtron) to question why a leak search was not done/recommended in 2nd year, while the AC was still under warranty and Freon ran out. I was put through to David Ferrone, director of Consumer/Service, at Airtron who looked up the service records and confirmed that a leak search should have been done, the first time the AC ran out of Freon. They agreed to replace the evaporator coil with aluminum one, at no cost and did another leak search to confirm that it was 100%.

It was refreshing to see a company take responsibility for fixing the problem without giving you the runaround.

Thanks David & Airtron for standing behind your service – it is greatly appreciated!

My house and air conditioners are 4 years old and i have added freon each summer to both central air units. The service man told me this year that everybody is replacing their Goodman coils due to faulty construction so i had my two coils replaced at a cost of $1,100.00.

I have already spent $1,800.00 for freon over the past four years so i would advise everyone to avoid using Goodman air conditioning products.

Goodman Evaporator Coil is Paper Thin
by: Anonymous

According to my HVAC Tech all of the newer copper evaporator coils on all manufacturers are real thin due to the cost of copper. He stated that York did a total recall on its new models and replaced the coils due to the majority of them leaking. I keep hoping that Goodman will do the same since it seems that they have the same problem. My system has been in approx 1.5 yrs and has a small leak of which I have been nursing all summer and hope to replace this fall. I RESUBMIT THAT GOODMAN NEEDS TO STEP UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING ABOUT THEIR PROBEMATIC EVAPORATOR COILS.

We just celebrated our fourth year in our newly constructed home, which came w/ a Goodman air conditioner. We have had to call AC man FIVE times now, and were just told this past week that coil in attic must be replaced. My brand new home came with two Goodman units. Within two years both of the coils have failed and nearly completely corroded. I've had the same experience as most of you have had. Instead of offering to help me recoup the $700 in repair bills, they instead offered me an "Extended Warranty". Seriously? Only if it's retroactive!

I'm on board for ANY class action lawsuit at this point. It's clear based on even cursory internet searches that this is a WIDE spread problem. There are certainly thousands of us in the same situation. I can only hope that something will be done.

2nd Evaporate Coil to Leak in 2 Years
by: J.C.

We just had a second evaporator coil to leak on another Goodman unit in our almost new home(have 5 units). Both cenral air units were under 2 years old.

When we purchased the central air units, we were told Goodman had a 10 year parts and labor warranty, yet we have ended up paying labor charges on both evaporator coils replaced.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to recover the labor charges from Goodman as we have 3 additional units that we are afraid will have the same problem soon.

The HVAC guy that just replaced the last evaporator coil told us the new coils that Goodman is sending them are heavier duty than the ones that came on the c/h/a units.

After the first year our unit was not cooling so our service man added freon... I thought this was strange, but it was working so we paid for the freon... same thing happened this year and our tech said that it was a leaking coil so he added freon, stop leak and charged me another $200.00. Was very dissatisfied so called Goodman, they said the freon should never have been added if we had a faulty coil..

they are supposed to replace the coil at no charge and Goodman "said" they would pay the labor.. I am going to hold them to this... then two days ago, until stopped cooling and the capacitor was bad... another service call and this unit if not even 4 yrs old yet.

Service tech said that everyone is just making everything cheap now... not agreeing with this.. if there is a class action suit, would like to know

I am also wondering if there is any legal actions pending or if something needs to be started. My evaporator coil has failed and needs to be replaced. Installed in 2008 when the house was built...I am first owner as of 2009 and it requires replacement due to leakage.

The HVAC tech that came out said his company has had a study stream of business changing this part out on the Goodman a/c systems. He actually suggested taking a look on the net to see if there are any legal actions being taken.

As for the replacement part...it's on back order...cause they can't keep them on the shelves. It's 94F on our upper floor....the whole family is camping down in the basement. It's going to be about 5 days before this part gets to the shop. In a word...PISSED.

New System?
by: Chester

Chances are the evaporator coil is not the problem this time (can't rule it out completly) there is a leak in the system and most can be repaired by any qualified HVAC technician. I would not consider replacing a 4 year old system until after I had the system completly checked out by a qualified HVAC tech.

Check the credentials of your service company and the service tech. Get references and check them out. Check with friends and neighbors and find out who they use and if they are satisfied with the service they get.

You can most likely spend no more than a 100 dollars or so to get the system repaired rather than a few thousand to replace the whole system.
